Carménère is a Bordeaux varietal that nearly vanished in Europe but found a new home in Chile, becoming the country's flagship grape. The grape produces full-bodied wines with distinctive notes of green pepper, dark berry, and plum. Carménère's name comes from its reddish vines and the "carmine" color it imparts to wine. Modern Chilean Carménère displays ripe dark fruit with herbaceous complexity and silky tannins, making it a benchmark for New World Bordeaux-style wines.
