About Merlot
Merlot is the most widely planted red grape variety in Bordeaux and the second most planted variety worldwide. Its name derives from "merle," French for blackbird, either due to the grape's dark blue color or the bird's fondness for the ripe berries. On Bordeaux's Right Bank, Merlot reigns supreme in the clay-rich soils of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, where legendary estates like Château Pétrus and Château Le Pin produce some of the world's most expensive wines from nearly 100% Merlot. The grape produces softer, more approachable wines than Cabernet Sauvignon, with plum and chocolate notes and gentle tannins that make it an ideal entry point for new red wine drinkers. After briefly falling out of fashion following the 2004 film Sideways, Merlot has enjoyed a strong resurgence as drinkers rediscover its generous fruit, silky texture, and remarkable food versatility.
