About Champagne
Champagne is not just a wine style but a specific region in northeastern France, the only place where true Champagne can be produced. Made primarily from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier using the méthode traditionnelle, Champagne undergoes secondary fermentation inside the bottle, creating its signature persistent, fine bubbles. The region's cool continental climate and unique chalk subsoils—deposited millions of years ago when the area was an ancient seabed—give the wines their hallmark minerality, razor-sharp acidity, and extraordinary aging potential. Non-vintage Champagne must age on lees for a minimum of 15 months, while vintage Champagne requires at least 36 months, and prestige cuvées often rest for seven years or more, developing the rich, toasty complexity that defines the finest examples. From the great houses like Krug, Bollinger, and Dom Pérignon to the rising wave of grower-producers crafting single-vineyard wines, Champagne offers a spectrum of styles that ranges from lean and incisive Blanc de Blancs to rich, powerful Blanc de Noirs and everything in between.
