About Gamay

Gamay is the signature grape of Beaujolais, a region south of Burgundy where granite-rich soils and a temperate continental climate allow the thin-skinned variety to produce some of the world's most joyful, refreshing red wines. The grape has a tumultuous history—famously banned from Burgundy by Philip the Bold in 1395 for being a "disloyal plant"—but it found its perfect home in Beaujolais, where ten distinct Cru villages (including Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent) produce wines of surprising depth and age-worthiness that rival Burgundian Pinot Noir in complexity. Carbonic maceration, the traditional fermentation technique where whole clusters ferment inside intact berries under a blanket of carbon dioxide, gives Beaujolais Nouveau its signature candy-like fruit and bubblegum aromatics, but serious Cru producers increasingly use conventional fermentation to craft structured, terroir-expressive wines. Beyond France, Gamay has gained a cult following among natural wine producers in the Loire Valley, Oregon's Willamette Valley, and parts of Switzerland, where the grape's bright acidity and low tannins make it ideal for minimal-intervention winemaking. The modern Gamay renaissance, led by producers like Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, and Julien Sunier, has transformed the grape's image from a cheap quaffing wine into one of the wine world's most exciting and collectible categories. Slightly chilled Gamay is the ultimate versatile food wine, equally at home with a Thanksgiving turkey, Japanese yakitori, or a simple cheese board.
