Grenache (known as Garnacha in Spain) is one of the world's most widely planted red grape varieties, with roots tracing back to the Aragon region of northeastern Spain. The grape thrives in hot, dry, windy conditions—making it perfectly suited to the sun-baked vineyards of the Southern Rhône, where it forms the backbone of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône blends alongside Syrah and Mourvèdre. In Spain's Priorat region, old-vine Garnacha produces some of the country's most intense and collectible wines, while Navarra and Campo de Borja offer outstanding value expressions. Grenache's thin skin produces wines with relatively pale color despite their alcohol and intensity, often reaching 14-16% ABV naturally. The grape is equally important in rosé production—Provence's pale, elegant rosés and Tavel's structured pink wines both rely heavily on Grenache for their character.
