Mourvèdre is a dark, tannic grape that thrives in the Mediterranean heat, particularly in southern France and Spain (where it's called Monastrell). The grape produces wines with concentrated dark fruit flavors, meaty notes, and earthy undertones. Mourvèdre is a traditional component of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bandol blends. When given warm growing conditions and proper ripeness, Mourvèdre develops remarkable complexity with flavors of dark plum, licorice, and savory herbs alongside its characteristic rusticity.
