About Viognier
Viognier is a highly aromatic grape variety that originated in the steep, granite-terraced vineyards of France's Northern Rhône Valley, where historical records trace its cultivation above the town of Condrieu to at least the Roman era—and possibly much earlier. By the 1960s, Viognier had dwindled to fewer than 30 acres worldwide, driven nearly to extinction by its difficult farming, notoriously low and unpredictable yields, and narrow harvest window between underripe herbaceousness and overripe flabbiness, before a global aromatic wine renaissance rescued it from oblivion. Today the variety thrives in California's Central Coast and Paso Robles, Virginia's Monticello AVA, South Australia, South Africa, and Argentina, with New World expressions emphasizing the grape's signature stone fruit exuberance in a more immediately approachable, fruit-forward style. Viognier produces rich, full-bodied wines with characteristically low acidity and an intensely perfumed nose of white peach, apricot blossom, and honeysuckle that is utterly unlike any other white variety—a quality that makes the wine simultaneously captivating and divisive, since those who prefer lean, mineral whites often find it overwhelming. In Condrieu, the appellation's unique combination of decomposed granite soils, steep south-facing slopes, and continental climate produces wines of extraordinary depth, glycerol texture, and a savory mineral complexity that ages surprisingly well despite the variety's low-acid reputation. A small amount of Viognier is also co-fermented with Syrah in the neighboring Côte-Rôtie appellation, where its aromatic lift, golden pigments, and color-fixing tannins contribute complexity to the blend in a tradition that predates modern winemaking science by centuries.
