About Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the noble grape of Italy's Piedmont region, responsible for the majestic wines of Barolo and Barbaresco—two of the world's most celebrated and age-worthy reds. Despite its deceptively pale garnet color, Nebbiolo produces intensely tannic, highly acidic wines that demand patience but reward cellaring with extraordinary complexity. The name comes from "nebbia" (fog), referencing the autumn mists that blanket Piedmont's Langhe hills during the grape's late October harvest. In the Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo reaches its most powerful and long-lived expression, while Barbaresco tends toward slightly earlier-drinking elegance, though both zones produce wines of profound depth. Beyond Piedmont, Nebbiolo thrives in Lombardy's Valtellina (where it's called Chiavennasca), producing leaner, more alpine expressions at high altitude. Modern producers have shortened maceration times and adopted smaller French oak barrels to create more approachable wines, though traditionalists still favor extended aging in large Slavonian oak botti for wines built to last decades.
