What is Riesling?
Riesling is widely considered one of the three greatest white wine grapes in the world, celebrated for its extraordinary aromatic complexity, electric acidity, and unmatched ability to express terroir with crystalline precision. Originating in the Rhine region of Germany—where it has been documented since the 15th century—Riesling thrives in cool continental climates where long, slow ripening seasons allow the grape to develop intense flavor concentration while retaining its hallmark racy acidity. Germany's Prädikat system classifies Riesling by ripeness level from Kabinett through Trockenbeerenauslese, offering a complete spectrum from feather-light, off-dry sippers to some of the most lusciously sweet and long-lived dessert wines on earth. In Alsace, Riesling takes on a drier, more full-bodied character with notes of stone fruit and petrol, while Austria's Wachau region and Australia's Clare and Eden Valleys produce taut, mineral-driven expressions of remarkable purity. The Finger Lakes in New York and Willamette Valley in Oregon have emerged as New World champions of the variety, crafting wines that balance fruit intensity with cool-climate elegance. Riesling is one of the few white wines that improves dramatically with decades of cellaring, developing complex notes of petrol, honey, dried apricot, and lanolin that make aged examples some of the most thrilling wines to drink.
