About Malbec
Malbec originated in France's Cahors region—where it was known as Côt and produced inky, tannic "black wines"—but found its true expression after being transplanted to Argentina's Mendoza wine region in the 1850s by French agronomist Michel Pouget. The grape thrives at extreme altitudes in the Andes foothills, where intense UV light at 3,000 to over 10,000 feet elevation produces extraordinarily thick skins, resulting in deeply colored wines with concentrated fruit and remarkably soft, velvety tannins. Argentina has made Malbec its undisputed flagship variety, with the Uco Valley sub-region emerging as a source for some of the most refined, terroir-driven expressions. While French Malbec from Cahors remains more structured and tannic, Argentine Malbec captivates with its lush fruit, approachability, and exceptional value at every price point. The grape's resurgence has been one of the great wine success stories of the 21st century, turning Argentina into a world-class wine country and making Malbec a gateway variety for millions of new wine drinkers.
