About Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is one of the oldest and most celebrated grape varieties in the world, with documented cultivation in Burgundy dating back to the 14th century and genetic roots that may extend to wild vines of ancient Gaul. Known as the "heartbreak grape" due to its extreme sensitivity to climate, soil, and winemaking decisions, it rewards skilled and patient producers with wines of extraordinary finesse, transparency, and aromatic complexity that no other variety can replicate. The thin-skinned grape produces lighter-colored wines with moderate to low tannins, but what it lacks in power it more than compensates for with silky texture, vibrant acidity, and an uncanny ability to translate the specific character of the vineyard into the glass. In Burgundy—the variety's undisputed spiritual home—a few hundred meters of distance can separate a village wine from a Grand Cru priced in the thousands, as exemplified by the legendary Côte de Nuits communes of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and Vosne-Romanée, where Domaine de la Romanée-Conti tends the most celebrated plots on earth. Oregon's Willamette Valley has emerged as the New World's most compelling terroir for Pinot Noir, with producers crafting wines of Burgundian restraint that challenge Old World assumptions, while Central Otago's dramatic alpine landscapes yield wines of concentrated fruit and vivid color that express a completely different facet of the grape's personality. Great Pinot Noir displays an almost ethereal, translucent quality—simultaneously delicate and complex, immediately pleasurable and endlessly rewarding with age—that has captivated wine lovers for centuries and continues to inspire some of the world's most devoted collectors.
