What is Syrah?
Syrah (known as Shiraz in Australia) is a dark-skinned grape variety that produces full-bodied, intense wines with remarkable depth and complexity. DNA analysis has confirmed the grape originated in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, born from a natural cross between Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche—not, as legend once suggested, from the ancient Persian city of Shiraz. In its French homeland, particularly in the appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, Syrah produces wines of extraordinary elegance and longevity, with signature notes of black pepper, smoked meat, and violets. Australia's Barossa Valley has given the grape a second identity as Shiraz, crafting richer, more opulent expressions with ripe dark fruit and chocolate notes that helped define New World winemaking. The grape adapts remarkably to different climates—cooler regions like Washington State's Walla Walla Valley produce restrained, peppery styles with bright acidity, while warmer sites in Paso Robles and Stellenbosch yield bold, fruit-forward wines with plush tannins. Syrah is also an essential blending partner with Grenache and Mourvèdre in the classic GSM blends of the Southern Rhône and Australia.
