About Priorat

Priorat in Catalonia is one of only two Spanish wine regions to hold the prestigious DOCa classification alongside Rioja, a testament to its extraordinary quality. Ancient vines cling to near-vertical terraced slopes of llicorella—the distinctive black slate and quartz soil that gives Priorat wines their signature mineral intensity and depth. The extreme altitude, harsh conditions, and centuries-old vineyards produce wines of remarkable concentration and complexity from Grenache and Carignan, the region's traditional grapes. The modern Priorat renaissance began in the late 1980s when a group of visionary winemakers led by Alvaro Palacios and René Barbier recognized the potential of these abandoned hillside vineyards. Today the region also incorporates Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot in its blends, creating wines that marry Mediterranean warmth with structured elegance. Priorat represents the ultimate expression of old-vine Mediterranean winemaking, where low yields from stressed vines concentrate flavors to an extraordinary degree.
